Concurrent Session: How To Create A Neuro-Affirming Classroom.
Presenting In Person
Annie Fitzgerald is a psychologist working in schools and private practice in Launceston. Her work focuses primarily on assessing and diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders and supporting mental health and neurodivergent differences. In the first two years of working in private practice, Annie started to notice the inundation of neurodivergent adults (or those who didn't know it yet) who showed up at her door with trauma, shame and a persistent feeling like they weren't their authentic selves. These adults ALWAYS described being told to "sit down, be quiet and try harder". They felt that others were telling them they were "wrong" somehow, defective or "other". And eventually they started telling themselves the same thing. In her work in schools, Annie realised she was also seeing the other "end" of this cycle. The place where it all starts. It's her hope that she can be a part of a change that is already happening - a move to understanding our differences, accepting ourselves and understanding exactly how we like to learn and work. She hopes to empower teachers and students in this way, and is super excited that you're here for the ride.
